Arch Oboler: Old-Time Radio Shows Writer and Producer Par Excellence
Arch Oboler is perhaps better known for his radio script career, and hails from the windy city Chicago. His career covered a range of different entertainment styles, from his main focus on old time radio script writing, through to producing and directing, and even writing novels. Arch's career transcended across the growing range of media of the day, graduating from radio to film star and television star too. Oboler was born in 1909 in Chicago, Illinois. He kick started his writing career from a very young age, as early as high school he was selling radio scripts. His somewhat controversial and suggestive take on the Adam and Eve story, which went on to star Don Ameche and Mae West in the titular roles, helped with his rise to fame.
It may have been that the show was broadcast on Sundays, or that it had a somewhat humored depiction of the Bible, but you can imagine how annoyed listeners would have been to hear that. The show caused quite a stir in old time radio. For many years, Mae West was also banned from radio shows. Though the sketch would be considered very mild by today's standards, it was very controversial for its time. When the fury died down, Oboler was offered the show 'Lights Out', a series that featured scary stories for the brave listener. By 1939 he continued to broadcast scary stories and more in his eponymous show 'Arch Oboler's Plays'.
Aside from his central radio work, Oboler starred in films and theater shows. Gangway for Tomorrow and Escape were just some of the movies that he starred in. He also directed films such as Bwana Devil and Twonky. In the 1940s, Arch Oboler managed many political marches and so on. Returning to script writing, he wrote many shows and productions with an anti-nazi theme as the core focus. In fact, his work was generally well received, and even attracted the likes of top flight Hollywood stars, who even offered to take on roles for scaled down pay.
Oboler also wrote the Broadway play 'Night of the Auk' and the novel 'House on Fire'. He enjoyed sci-fi and horrow, and even gave out his performances at perfect pitch. His work was often described as gruesome, but that didn't stop him from having millions of fans. The work of Arch Oboler stood out in his time. His work was always done in a unique manner, which sometimes brought about inevitable controversy, since the time was relatively rife with social taboos. The 1930s was the start of what would be a rise in popularity and fame to support his career. 'Lights Out' was one of Oboler's old radio shows that stood out beyond the others, and can even be heard on some old time radio channels to this day. Oboler's work did outlive him and continues to be popular even after his death in March 1987. A huge star of old time radio shows, he has many fans that enjoyed the scary stories he had to offer.
